Adolescent gynecology care
Seeing a gynecologist for the first time is an important step in every young woman's life. If you are or someone you care about is experiencing signs of puberty (start of menstrual period, breast growth), it is time to schedule a first visit with a gynecologist.
The board-certified gynecologists at Novant Health Carolina Women's Health Associates are well-trained in adolescent gynecologic care. Everyone in our office takes extra time and care to make sure the first visits with a gynecologist are pleasant experiences. This reduces apprehension and encourages honest questions now and during future gynecologic care.
A first gynecologic exam might include:
- A breast exam to check for lumps or abnormal breast growth.
- A pelvic exam and Pap smear to monitor reproductive health.
- A conversation about birth control.
The exam always includes plenty of time to address concerns and ask questions. We work to ensure confidentiality for our younger patients. While we encourage them to include parents or caregivers in their medical care, there are portions of the exam where a provider might ask to see the patient without family members or caregivers present.
